The 2026 edition of the Alter Real Annual Auction, held at the historic Coudelaria de Alter, once again gathered breeders, riders and Lusitano enthusiasts from across the globe. With strong attendance both in person and online, the event reaffirmed its status as a must-attend event on the Lusitano calendar. However, this year’s results reflected a notably more cautious and selective market climate.

A total of six horses were sold — five mares and one stallion — reaching a combined turnover of €75,200. While the atmosphere remained vibrant, buyer behaviour pointed clearly towards restraint, with a focus on immediate value and proven performance over future-oriented investments.

A Shift from 2025

The contrast with the 2025 edition is significant. Last year, 14 horses were sold (7 mares and 7 stallions), generating a total of €132,900. Compared to 2025, this year’s figures represent a drop of €57,700 in turnover — a decrease of approximately 43%. The auction dynamics also reflected a quieter bidding environment, with fewer prolonged bidding battles and a more measured pace throughout the sale. Notably, this year’s edition revealed a clear shift in buyer preference, with a strong focus on mares, underlining breeders’ ongoing commitment to strengthening and refining their breeding programmes.

Proven Quality Takes Priority - Gniqui AR the highest sale

The top price of the 2026 auction was €20,000, achieved by Gniqui AR, a 15-year-old stallion by Que-Joli AR. With a solid background at the Portuguese School of Equestrian Art, Gniqui AR embodied the qualities most sought after in this year’s market: reliability, experience, and advanced training. His sale highlights a broader trend — buyers are prioritising horses with established credentials and clear performance records, rather than investing in younger prospects requiring time and further development. In uncertain economic conditions, this preference reflects a desire for security and predictability.

Opportunities Remain Post-Auction

Despite the lower sales volume, the auction does not mark the end of opportunities. Horses that remained unsold are still available for purchase, now offered at a 10% increase on their final bid prices. These individuals will be featured in the Lusitano World Online Catalogue in the coming days, providing buyers with a second opportunity to secure quality horses, with the added advantage of additional time for careful consideration.

Notably, many of these horses are piroplasmosis-free, representing a strong and secure investment opportunity. All have full radiographic examinations available for review by interested buyers, ensuring transparency and confidence in the selection process. Prospective buyers can also benefit from tailored guidance through Lusitano World, ensuring each selection aligns with their specific criteria and objectives. A Market Defined by Clarity

While the 2026 figures may suggest caution at first glance, they also reflect a more informed, selective, and confident buyer base. The comparison with 2025 highlights not only a natural adjustment in spending levels, but also a healthy recalibration of priorities among international buyers. In a year shaped by global economic uncertainty, the Alter Real Auction continues to demonstrate resilience and relevance within the Lusitano market. Buyers are investing with greater clarity and purpose, placing strong emphasis on quality, reliability, and immediate value, while still recognising the importance of long-term potential.

As the Lusitano community looks ahead, the message is encouraging: the market remains active, engaged, and increasingly discerning — with a clear focus on quality-driven decisions that strengthen the future of the breed.
