A 6-day horseback journey through the wild heart of Serra d’Arga, where the horses become your true companions and the mountains become your home.
On the first day, you’ll meet and be paired with the horse that will accompany you throughout the entire journey. Then, together, you set off into the mountains — following ancient trails, mountain paths, rivers and valleys, travelling from one hidden destination to the next.
What makes this experience truly unique is that your horse travels with you every step of the way. When you stop for the night, your horse stops too. While you rest, your horse rests nearby. The next morning, you wake up knowing that the same horse you rode through the mountains the day before will be waiting for you to continue the adventure.
Each day takes you deeper into the heart of Serra d’Arga, to remote places and authentic villages that few visitors ever reach — secluded mountain locations known mainly to the people who live there. Places far from the usual tourist routes, where you can experience Portugal as an insider, discovering its landscapes, traditions, gastronomy and hospitality in the most authentic way.
There is no rushing from one place to another. No crowds, no distractions, no schedules dictated by the outside world. Just you, your horse, your fellow riders and the mountains. A chance to put your phone away, leave the noise behind and completely disconnect from everyday life. At the end of each day, you settle into carefully selected local accommodation, where the horses stay close by and where you can enjoy the flavours of the region through authentic local gastronomy and carefully selected Portuguese wines.
This is not simply six days of riding. It is six days of living with the horses, travelling through the mountains and discovering Portugal as an insider — slowly, authentically and on horseback. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
- Group size: A minimum of 4 and a maximum of 8 participants is required for each programme. Lusitano World reserves the right to cancel the programme if the minimum number is not reached, up to 6 weeks prior to the start date.
- Minimum age: 10. Riders aged 10–18 must be accompanied by a responsible adult.
- Maximum rider weight: 100 kg.

PROGRAMME START & END
The programme starts on Monday, 24 May 2027, with a group transfer from Porto Airport at 2:00pm. Please make sure you are at the airport and ready for collection at this time. After arrival, we will check-in to Cerquido, introduce you to the riders and horses joining the programme, followed by a welcome dinner. The programme ends on Saturday, 29 May 2027, after a farewell lunch. The group transfer to Porto Airport will arrive at approximately 5:00 pm.
AIRPORT & TRANSFERS
Your arrival and departure airport should be Porto Airport (OPO). If you need to travel via Lisbon Airport (LIS), we can arrange a transfer between Lisbon and Porto at an additional cost, availability to be confirmed. Transfers outside the programme schedule can also be arranged on request and will be charged separately.
EXTENDING YOUR STAY
If you would like to arrive before the programme begins or extend your stay afterwards, additional nights can be arranged, subject to accommodation availability. Lusitano World can assist with organising your additional accommodation, airport transfers and any other transportation required before or after the Mountain Ride. Any extra services will be arranged in advance and quoted separately according to your requirements. If you choose to extend your stay, this may also be an opportunity to add a personalised dressage experience to your programme.
EXTRA DRESSAGE LESSONS
Take your riding experience one step further and extend your stay beyond the mountains. Ride professionally trained Lusitanos and experience the refinement of advanced dressage exercises. You can add a dressage experience with one lesson, or, if you want to dedicate more time to your riding, we can create a personalised programme with several lessons, tailored to your level, interests and goals - we will curate the right programme for you.
RIDING EQUIPMENT
Please bring comfortable, appropriate riding clothing and suitable riding footwear. A properly fitted riding helmet is mandatory throughout the programme. As we will spend long hours outdoors and at higher elevations, good sun protection is essential. We recommend lightweight, breathable clothing with good coverage, sports sunglasses and sunscreen. Riding gloves and a water bottle or hydration flask that can be securely attached to your saddle are also recommended to keep you comfortable and hydrated throughout the rides. If you are unsure about what to bring, our team will be happy to advise you.
RIDER LEVEL & AGE
The 6-Day Mountain Ride Programme is suitable for riders from beginner to advanced amateur level, as well as professional riders looking to enjoy an authentic mountain riding experience through the beautiful landscapes of Northern Portugal. The programme accommodates different levels of experience, with horse selection and riding arrangements adapted accordingly. The minimum age is 10 years old. Riders aged 10 to 18 must be accompanied by a responsible adult, unless otherwise agreed with the Lusitano World team. For the welfare, comfort and safety of our horses, riders over 100 kg are unfortunately unable to participate. We appreciate your understanding.
RESERVATION FEE & PAYMENTS
A €600 reservation fee is required to secure your place and is non-refundable. The remaining €2,000 balance is due two weeks before the programme begins. This specific programme requires a minimum of 4 participants: Lusitano World may cancel if the minimum is not reached, up to 6 weeks before the start date. In this case, all amounts paid will be fully refunded. If a participant is unable to attend and provides at least 6 weeks’ notice, the reservation fee will automatically be transferred to another Lusitano World riding programme, subject to the participant’s selection and availability. For cancellations made less than 6 weeks before the programme, the reservation fee is non-refundable, and Lusitano World reserves the right to determine whether it may be transferred.
INSURANCE & LIABILITY
We strongly recommend arranging comprehensive travel insurance that includes cover for horse riding and related activities. Horse riding is an activity that carries inherent risks. Lusitano World and its partners cannot be held responsible for accidents, injuries, loss or damage arising from participation in the programme, except where liability cannot legally be excluded. Before the programme begins, all participants will be required to sign a Liability Waiver Agreement, which will be sent by email in advance for review and signature.
